Seeing my son and his wife and family. I wrote about it in my last post, but basically I went for a quick weekend by myself -- I couldn't wait until Thanksgiving to see the baby again!
On Tuesday evening, a friend from high school was in town, so a few of us got together for dinner. I treasure these lifelong friendships. As the years go by, it takes all of us to remember what happened 40 plus years ago. And even then, the record is a bit fuzzy! LOL!
For years, I've been starting my day with reading devotionals. I have a favorite that a friend gifts me with each year, and then there are usually one or two others that I find along the way, all from different denominations and spiritual beliefs. This is one I came across a couple of months ago, and I just love it. I like that it begins the day with a scripture reference, then a reflection written by different authors each day. Then, a suggestion for the day.
Fall candles are my favorites. I found this one at a little shop last weekend, and it smells so delicious! When I light it I think about the day I spent with my son and daughter-in-law and grandkids.
I spent some time cleaning up garden pots yesterday, replacing the bedraggled summer flowers with mums. Today, I'm going to do more of the same, attacking the vegetable garden and clearing out dried up vines and plants. It's a good start to fall cleaning, something else on my list.
Do you have some favorite moments from this week?

I did some cleaning up of flower pots last week--felt good to do that, as they'll still bloom here for many weeks to come. So nice you could visit with your son and his family and some old friends! I love devotionals, too. I read Joni Eareckson Tad's Spectacle of Glory last year and highly recommend it.
My summer flowers are still blooming as here on the east coast we are still pretty much having summer weather although the evening sun are beginning to feel like autumn. I did clean up a couple of empty pots though and i will some more to clean as the month draws to an end.
I love devotional books ...i tend to read right from, the Bible first and then use a devotional in the late afternoons after work as a way to unwind from the hectic day. I think i have the one you picture!!
Enjoy the weekend!
Glad you had a nice weekend with the family. Meeting up with old friends is usually fun too. We have a return to good, warm weather this weekend but lots of trees are showing summer is actually over. There are always things to do in the garden though! Enjoy your weekend.
That short visit to Wisconsin sounds like it might deserve all five faves :) Seeing that little one is so special.
It's really hot here this weekend--my mums are in shock.
I often read from my Celtic Night Prayers book which I found years and years ago. I love to read it just before I turn the light out and go to sleep.
Happy Weekend to you!
Well you went and did it, Karen. You "made" me order a candle. All your fault!
No, thank you, I love candles, fall ones especially so can't wait till it comes in. Not cleaning up the garden yet, either of us. Still have September sale trees in pots we're waiting to plant when it gets cooler. We've been in a heat wave. But I think we're really going to clean up the garden in October because last year I insisted on leaving lots of "interesting" faded perennials so that they would look pretty when it snowed--you know, like in English gardens in the snow? Ha! We only had a dusting of snow twice last winter and the garden just looked messy the rest of the time.
I have a favorite devotional book I've used for 5 years now, The Mockingbird Devotional, but I also have two old ones with short entries that I love, one taken from C.S. Lewis's writings called The Business of Heaven and a delightful day book from the 50s by Richardson Wright who was an Episcopalian layman after retiring from his decades as editor of House & Garden magazine. I think a good devotional book is one that you find new meaning every year you repeat it and so far I've found this in all three.
Btw, your grandchildren are beautiful! And I love their names. Yes, Thanksgiving is too long to wait.
Sounds perfect. I enjoyed a few days of decorating and cleaning before the weekend. Friday and Saturday were busy days with family - which I love.
This week I need to work on the outside.. my gardens are a wreck.
Have a great new week.
How special that you got an extra visit in with your grandbaby and family. I'm very fickle with devotional books. Sometimes I'm gung ho with them and then I miss one day and boom, it's done for a while. I've got to get outside and do some work.
